MARIETTA, OHIO — For Washington State College of Ohio (WSCO) alumnus Devon Moss, a career in law enforcement wasn’t sparked by a single defining moment, it was shaped by a natural instinct to help others and a drive to stay active and engaged. Today, just a few years after graduating from WSCO, Moss is making a meaningful impact in his hometown and was recently honored as the 2025 Officer of the Year at the Marietta Police Department.

A lifelong resident of Marietta, Ohio, Moss chose WSCO to stay close to home while pursuing his education in Criminal Justice and the Peace Officer Basic Academy (POBA) program. “I grew up here, so I wanted to continue my education close to home,” he shared.

Moss credits WSCO’s small class sizes and hands-on learning approach as key factors in his success. The close relationships he built with instructors played an important role in shaping his career path. “Having direct access to my professors made a huge difference,” Moss explained. “Many of them had prior experience in law enforcement and connections with local agencies, which really helped when I started looking for a job.”

Through WSCO, Moss completed the Ohio Police Officer Training Academy (OPOTA), where he received the certification required to become a police officer in the state of Ohio. The academy provided him with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to begin his career in law enforcement.

His transition from student to officer happened quickly. Before graduating, Moss had the opportunity to connect with a representative from the Marietta Police Department who visited his POBA class to discuss career opportunities. “I applied right away and was offered a position before I even graduated,” he said. After completing his state certification exam, he officially joined the department.

Now heading into his fifth year with the Marietta Police Department, Moss has already distinguished himself through his dedication and proactive approach to policing. According to his colleagues, his efforts in removing impaired drivers from the road and addressing dangerous narcotics and weapons in the community were key factors in his selection as Officer of the Year.

For Moss, the recognition carries significant meaning. “It shows that I’ve gained the trust of both my coworkers and the community,” he said. “In a career that can sometimes feel underappreciated, it’s reassuring to know that the work you’re doing is truly not going unnoticed.”

Looking ahead, Moss remains committed to serving and protecting the community he calls home. He plans to continue focusing on proactive policing efforts that keep residents safe and improve quality of life throughout Marietta.

Moss’s journey is a powerful example of how local education can lead to meaningful career success. Through hands-on training, mentorship, and determination, he has built a career dedicated to service, proving that sometimes the path to making a difference starts right here at home.
