MARIETTA, OHIO — Washington State College of Ohio’s (WSCO) Peace Officer Basic Academy (POBA) has achieved a 100% pass rate on both the Physical Fitness exam and the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) state certification exam for the third consecutive academy under the leadership of Commander Scott Trussell. This continued success reflects the dedication of the cadets, the strength of the academy’s training, and the collaborative support of WSCO’s faculty, staff, and instructors.
“This was my third Peace Officer Basic Academy class I have commanded here at Washington State, and I am very proud of achieving our third straight 100% pass rate,” said Commander Scott Trussell. “I believe this success goes to more than just myself. It also goes to our outstanding academy instructors as well as the College’s staff and administration. This is truly a team effort from Washington State to help our area’s law enforcement agencies put more officers on our streets.”
Passing both the Physical Fitness exam and the OPOTC state certification exam is required for POBA graduates, ensuring they are prepared for the physical and professional demands of a career in law enforcement.
WSCO’s POBA program combines rigorous physical training with weekly classroom assessments, scenario-based exercises, and instruction from experienced, active law enforcement professionals. This comprehensive approach prepares cadets with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed while also providing valuable networking opportunities with local agencies. Many cadets receive employment offers before completing the academy.
In addition to earning their peace officer certification, students have the opportunity to apply their academy training toward a Criminal Justice degree at WSCO, creating a pathway for continued education and career advancement. Financial aid is available for qualified students, helping make the program accessible to those pursuing a career in law enforcement.
With three consecutive academies achieving a 100% pass rate, WSCO’s Peace Officer Basic Academy continues to set a high standard for law enforcement education in the region, producing graduates who are prepared to serve their communities with professionalism and integrity.
The next Peace Officer Basic Academy is scheduled to begin in October. Prospective students are encouraged to complete the required Physical Fitness Assessment to qualify for the program.
