Victoria Smalls is a Gullah Geechee native of St. Helena Island, South Carolina.  The Gullah Geechee are direct descendants of West Africans who were brought to the United States via the Middle Passage to construct and work on the plantations of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.  They were enslaved for generations until emancipation in the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.  Ms. Smalls is Executive Director of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, N.H.A., Beaufort, South Carolina, where she collaborates with local, national, and global community partners to protect, preserve, and interpret the history, traditional cultural practices, heritage sites, and natural resources associated with the Gullah Geechee people who reside across the 12,000 square-mile National Heritage Area.   This presentation is made possible by the Civil War Round Table of the Mid-Ohio Valley and the generosity of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, N.H.A., an affiliate of the National Park Service, and grants from the Ohio Arts Council and West Virginia Humanities Council.
